About this resource
Created by Japan International Animal Emergency Care Association Sunny Kamiya, President
This site is a free learning resource covering 128 animals kept in homes: common illnesses and their warning signs, prevention and first aid; common injuries; zoonoses; husbandry (food, water, toys, nest, bedding); housing (cage, space, exercise, temperature and humidity, grooming, predators); care precautions (ingestion, being stepped on, pinching, falls, escape, releasing a bite); an emergency-care manual; and a case method of 50 scenario questions per animal.
Before you use it
- The content is general guidance and does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a veterinarian.
- First aid only bridges the time until you reach a vet. When in doubt, call an animal hospital and follow their instructions.
- Save the phone numbers of your regular vet and an emergency animal hospital in advance.
- Legal references (Japan's Act on Welfare and Management of Animals, Specified Animals, Invasive Alien Species Act, Wildlife Protection Act, CITES, Infectious Diseases Control Act, etc.) describe Japanese law and may change. Check your local regulations before acquiring an animal.
- If a person is bitten or scratched, wash under running water and see a doctor if there is swelling or fever.
- The English edition is a translation of the Japanese original. Legal information refers to Japan.
